Doula/Monatrice Services

Prenatal and labor support from an advanced practioner.

Women who receive continuous labor support are:

  • more likely to give birth spontaneously
  • less likely to give birth via caesarean or with a vacuum or forceps
  • less likely to use pain medications
  • more likely to be satisfied
  • have slightly shorter labor
  • are less likely to have low Apgar scores
  • more likely to have a natural childbirth

Every woman deserves to have an informed pregnancy and to receive physical and emotional support during birth from a loving and compassionate birth partner.

What is a doula?

A doula provides physical and emotional support to the laboring woman. She is not a medical professional.
  • Helps the family make informed birth choices by providing evidence-based information
  • Gives the woman an opportunity to labor at home as long as possible before going to an out-of-home birth (i.e. birthing center or hospital)
  • Provides unbiased support, however and wherever you choose to have your baby
  • Takes the pressure off of the birth partner (husband, wife, sister, mom, etc.) to let them do what they do best
  • Helps them create realistic birth plans and navigate changes when/if they arise

What is a monatrice?

A monatrice is a medical professional who is able to perform assessments prenatally and during labor out-of-hospital, as well as offer physical and emotional support in the hospital setting.

A monatrice is a trained and licensed midwife (CPM, LM or CNM) who can offer clinical assessments prenatally and during labor. She can monitor baby’s heart rate, take mama’s vital signs, and perform a cervical check if desired.

Some women who are having a hospital birth with a traditional OB would like to labor at home as long as possible in order to try and prevent many common hospital interventions. Having a monatrice in the home setting before heading to the hospital gives many women ease of mind, so they and their partner can just focus on labor.

Once the monatrice arrives at the hospital with her laboring client, she transitions into a doula role, providing comfort and support as needed.

Prenatal and Postpartum Care

As a licensed midwife, I am also able to provide prenatal and postpartum care, based on the midwifery model of care. Families can choose to have this prenatal and postpartum care in addition to their regular OB visits.

If you are interested in labor support services, please call, text or email me and we can set up an interview at your convenience. I provide doula and monatrice services at home births, birth centers and hospitals throughout the Hill Country, including (but not limited to) Austin, San Antonio, Wimberley, New Braunfels, Blanco, Marble Falls, Dripping Springs and San Marcos.
